Oregon Performance Internship/Summer 2004
Attracting Top Graduate Students from Around the Nation

The Oregon Performance Internship (OPI) is a unique opportunity for the students in public affairs, public policy, and public administration to spend a summer in Oregon helping public and nonprofit agencies solve performance measurement and management challenges. It is also a highly effective way for local governments to gain access to top talent at a very affordable price.

This two-year old initiative was developed by the Oregon Business Council and PSU Hatfield School of Government to attract top students from the nation's top 25 schools of public policy and public administration. So far, students have participated from the following universities: Harvard, Princeton, Syracuse, UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Indiana, Berkeley (public affairs and business schools), the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Portland State University, and Willamette University.

During the last two years, Oregon Performance Interns have been sponsored by the following state agencies: Department of Human Services, Watershed Enhancement Board. Department of Administrative Services, Department of Transportation, Commission on Children and Families, Oregon Progress Board, and Secretary of State. OPI interns have also worked for the City of Portland, City of Beaverton, League of Oregon Cities, CleanWater Services, and Oregon Coalition of Health Care Purchasers

PSU MPA Organizational Experience
Applying Coursework to Real Situations in Real Settings

A required part of the Hatfield School's Master in Public Administration program is an organizational experience toward the end of the student's studies after at least 42 credits have been earned. The organizational experience may be a compensated or volunteer arrangement.

The organizational experience typically involves the student working on an administrative or management issue confronting a public, non-profit or health services organization. It is an opportunity for the student to relate her/his academic experience in the master's program to the issue that is the focus of the experience.

The student should spend a minimum of 150 hours of work in the organizational experience. The organizational experience typically coincides with PSU's academic quarters, but some flexibility is possible. Results are monitored by a Hatfield School faculty member.

Please contact the Hatfield School's Gretchen Kafoury (kafouryg@pdx.edu), Coordinator of Internship Programs at 503-725-2955 if you have an idea for an MPA student's organizational experience. She can help qualify eligible and suitable candidates for you to consider.

PSU MPA Class Projects
When You Have an Issue or Special Project and No One to Address It

Every jurisdiction routinely has issues arise or special projects that need attention … with no one readily available to do them. In such case, the Hatfield School may be able to help out. Potential projects could involve data analysis, research, policy analysis, planning, electronic government, human resources, budgeting, information technology, citizen participation, and all the other activities that are part of daily life in local government.

With scores of courses offered by our three academic divisions …
  • Division of Administration of Justices
  • Division of Public Administration
  • Division of Political Science

… as well as special programs from the Hatfield School's five institutes …
  • Criminal Justice Policy Research Institute
  • Executive Leadership Institute
  • Institute for Nonprofit Management
  • NW American Turkish Research Institute
  • National Policy Consensus Center
  • Institute of Tribal Government

… your problem may be big enough for an entire class to take on as a term-long project … or small enough for one or two students to tackle. In any event, we are looking for real-life learning experiences. Please contact the Hatfield School's Gretchen Kafoury (kafouryg@pdx.edu), Coordinator of Internship Programs at 503-725-2955 if you have an idea for a class project. She can put you in touch with a faculty member to work out the particulars.
